OSHA Silica Standard for Construction 1926.1153 – Pros and Cons From an Employer Perspective

OSHA has given employers latitude to decide between two alternatives to achieve compliance with the new OSHA Silica Standard for Construction. The first option involves measuring workers exposure to silica and selecting a dust control method that they feel will work best to limit exposures below the PEL for their specific jobsites. The other alternative involves specific control methods for specific job tasks laid out in Table 1 of the construction standard. Table 1 provides employers with a chart listing equipment and work tasks, the associated engineering and work practice control method recommended and the required respiratory protection and minimum assigned protection factor. Each alternative has benefits and limitations. Below is a table highlighting the pros and cons from an employer perspective.
